RAMADAN FASTING: A STEP IN QUITTING SMOKELESS TOBACCO AND ALLEVIATING ITS WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS

Abstract

In Ramadan, Muslims fast. Smokeless tobacco (SLT) users may experience withdrawal symptoms. The researchers aimed at assessing the frequency and severity of SLT withdrawal symptoms among Ramadan fasting SLT users. Using a pre and post observation: before and after Ramadan breakfast study was designed, a self-administered questionnaire was also created to validate and utilize the gathered data from the participants. The questionnaire was distributed to participants both directly and through social media. During Ramadan, 48 Sudanese males working in Saudi Arabia were evaluated for the effects of stopping SLT. The majority of them had no chronic illnesses and were employed, with average age of around 40 years, and average smoking duration of 17.19 years, 27% of them use other tobacco products. Friends impact in 47.91% of cases was the initial use motivator. On studying the first-dip symptoms, we found, in addition to other symptoms, the mood has improved in 81.25%, and concentration in 41.67% of cases. Before dipping SLT, 54.17% of participants break their fasting by ingesting adequate food and liquids. In 66.7% of cases, craving was the most noticeable symptom. As Ramadan progressed, we noted a statistically significant difference over time in the severity of the symptoms (P value 0.027). The SOWS score showed a significant difference between day 1 and day seven (P value <0.001), with a moderate degree of symptoms (mean 17.19). In this study, interrupted fasting has increased the chance of withdrawing from SLT. Symptoms get better as the length of such fasting increases. Noticeable symptoms of the first use are the improvement in mood and concentration. Further research is required to utilize Ramadan fast for quitting smoking.
