Abstract

Rising the temperature in urban area compare to surrounding area is known as urban heat islands phenomenon. This phenomenon can be caused by multiple reason such as increase of human activities which lead to increase carbon dioxide emissions, unsustainable building structure, increase of land-use and others. This will lead to various impacts to environment and importantly to human health. Thus this systematic review aims to identify the impact of urban heat islands especially on human health. Two databases ( PubMed and Web of Science) were used to collect the relevant articles using the proposed keywords and the inclusion criteria ( Original article published in English language from 2012 to 2022 ). Two pair of independent reviewers screened the titles and abstract of the extracted article, transferred in Microsoft Excel and Mendeley. The included articles will be critically appraised to assess the quality of the studies using the Mixed Method Appraisal (MMAT) Tool. 16 articles were included in this study from initial 612 collected articles. From this review we found that urban heat islands had an impact on human health especially on morbidity and mortality regarding cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, heat related illnesses and mental health. Finally, mitigating measures should be implemented to improve the quality of life of those affected by this phenomenon.
