A CASE SERIES ON LIFESTYLE CHARACTERISTICS OF OBESE CHILDREN IN MOSUL CITY

Abstract

 

Obesity among children is a major health problem. This study aimed to describe the features and risk factors for overweight and obesity among children in Mosul city. A case series study design was implemented to achieve the aim of the study by distributing validated, structured self-administered questionnaires to a convenience sample consisting of 85 mothers of obese or overweight children attending the primary health care center and private clinic in Mosul city during  2024. Descriptive statistics were done using SPSS statistical software. Results reveal that three-quarters of the obese and overweight children (76%) spend more than 5 hours on TV and more than 7 hours on video gaming. Little activity was recorded among 78% of them. Small houses' lack of recreational activity clubs was the commonly recorded factor for child inactivity. Parent spoiling was recorded in 56% of cases. Lack of knowledge about a healthy diet was present in 88% of participants' parents. The preferred food was a carbohydrate-dense, low-fiber diet. In conclusion, obese or overweight children shared features of a sedentary lifestyle, a high-carb diet. Low physical activity, small housing, and a lack of recreational physical clubs, accompanied by a lack of knowledge of healthy living, could be contributive factors for the development of obesity. Educational programs should be directed to the schools, primary health care centers, and health care providers for enhancing a healthy lifestyle among children and tailoring their diet preferences. Further study is needed to link the modernization of small housing to the development of obesity
