Abstract

A quasi experimental study was carried out in three land development schemes in Peninsular Malaysia from January 2003 to December 2003 to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive intervention programme in reducing risk behavior among adolescents. Three schools were given the intervention programme ( referred to as case school) and another three schools which were not given any from of intervention ( control schools) were chosen in all the three land development schemes. Pre and postintervention data were collected from all fonn one adolescents which fanned the sample. Even though there was a significant increase in the percentage of adolescents with risk behavior at post--intervention but the increase was higher amongst control schools (32.2%) compared to case schools (29 .2%). A significant reduction occurred amongst those identified as having risk behavior at pre-intervention amongst the case schools (25 .8%) and control schools ( 32.6%). This study showed the importance of an adolescent interventive programme not only in reducing the number of adolescents with risk behavior but also to prevent a large proportion of adolescents from having risk behavior.
