Abstract

Due to Anemia, a severe health issue, pregnant women in Somalia are increasingly at risk for morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine Anemia's prevalence and the factors contributing to it in Mogadishu's pregnant population. A cross-sectional study was carried out from March to November 2020. Five hundred thirty pregnant women were selected using a simple random sampling method. An anthropometric, hemoglobin measurements and a standardized questionnaire were used. The SPSS version 25 was used to analyze the data. Odds ratio, descriptive analysis, and the Chi-square test were utilized. The prevalence of Anemia was 69%. Age of marriage of < 16 years (AOR=10.566 CI: 1.589-70.271, P=0.015), iron supplement (AOR= 7.040, CI: 3.617-13.702. p=0.001), family income less than 100$ (AOR= 4.695, CI=1.361-16.191, P=0.014), eating meat once a week (AOR=4.233, CI: 2.261-7.924, P=0.001) history of worm infestation (AOR=2.468, CI:1.302-4.677, P=0.006), frequency of meals a day(AOR=1.936, CI:1.022-3.67, P=0.043), and drinking tea (AOR=3.497, CI:1.75-6.96, P=0.001) were the associated factor of Anemia. This study suggests that targeted public health interventions focused on improving dietary practices, particularly iron intake, alongside programs aimed at preventing parasitic infections, could be effective in mitigating the high prevalence of anemia observed in this population.
